It’s a Very Akamatsu Christmas as Third Seat by the Window and Warui Deshou join forces to take on two Ken Akamatsu “beloved” Christmas “classics,” as well as play a few party games.
This episode has quite a fraught history. We all made a first pass at it in Christmas 2017, but stuff came up during recording, and we ultimately didn’t get it done. Then, we got back together six months later and recorded it as a “Christmas In July” kind of thing; however, one of our recordings got messed up about two-thirds of the way through our recording session. After some extensive editing by Buggy, the episode emerged in October of this year on the Third Seat feed. And now, we bring it to you, our Warui Deshou fans, around the time it was originally intended for! Enjoy, and Happy Holidays!
Celtic Mythology meets poignant recovery allegory in the 2017-2018 anime “Ancient Magus Bride”. Returning pod friend Shadon and our good friend Bethany join us to discuss this beautiful anime that’s very personal and meaningful to all of us.
This episode is a long one, but it’s packed with discussion about the surprisingly intricate narrative the show builds about healing and learning to build healthy relationships. The first half of the episode is a spoiler-free introduction to the anime and themes, and Bethany gives much insightful history and context for the show’s representations of creatures from actual Celtic mythology. From 1:53:45 begins the in-depth spoilery discussion of story and themes.
***Content warning for respectfully nuanced, but involved discussions including trauma, abuse, suicide, mental illness, recovery, and drug addiction.***
Happy St Patricks Day everyone! Warui Deshou is getting the next round in with a bonus cast on a very special game called VA-11 HALL-A. Developed by Sukeban Games and published by Ysbryd Games in 2016, VA-11 HALL-A is exactly what it says on the tin: Cyberpunk Bartending Action.
Or is it? Is there more to the bar and the people who frequent it? Can dogs really talk? Can an AI experience an orgasm? Is social media subtly eroding our senses of reservation and personal privacy? And is it possible for someone to own a pet bear? All of these issues and more are discussed within the cast, so crack open a cold one and join The Subtle Doctor and Shadon as they discuss their mutual GOTY 2016, complete with positives and negatives, plus discussion of dystopian fiction, drinking games, mousemats with boobs and of course booze, glorious, glorious booze.
Featuring the music of T Pain ft. Akon, Reel Big Fish, and of course Michael Kelly.
Speaking of whom, massive shout outs to Michael Kelly aka Garoad for his continuing permission to use his music on the podcast. We’re immensely grateful for this and would highly recommend you give him a shout out on Twitter for creating such a brilliant OST.
A few things re the cast and what’s happened since it was recorded:
This podcast was recorded in two parts which have been gelled into one, so there may be some slight differences in audio levels after a certain point.
Also, Shadon recorded at 0600 his time on both occasions, hence why his voice sounds like he’s been gargling gravel. It’s probably better than his usual voice.
Since the recording of this podcast, an update for VA-11 HALL-A has come out that gives players both the Demo and the Prologue content for free, as if you needed a further reason to buy this amazing game.
The Demo, best we can tell, is no longer available to download as a standalone sadly. But trust us, it’s well worth the asking price for the full product.
00:00:17 – T-Pain ft Akon – Bartender
00:01:48 – A 45% ABV full bottle of VA-11 HALL-A discussion, story, characters, music, the works. Expect spoilers throughout.
Fujiko Mine, Mine Fujiko. Teacher, resistance fighter, consort, betrothed, spy, thief. Is she all of these things? Or none of them? Just who is the Woman Named Fujiko Mine? A slippery question, but Warui Deshou never turns down a challenge. Helmed creatively by Sayo Yamamoto (whom you might know from a popular recent anime about some ice skaters or something), Lupin III: The Woman Named Fujiko Mine was created to celebrate the franchise’s 40th anniversary while also taking it in a direction it was not particularly known for: more noir and supremely sexy and confident in itself, not to mention it did not focus on Lupin himself, but rather a character who had been ill defined previously.
With special guest Alexander Smit, join Warui Deshou as we discuss topics raised within the show such as sexuality and gender identity, and also the anime itself. Oh, and we also go off topic into things such as bat nipples and cold ones in the shower. As you do.
Alexander’s article on The Big O can be found here.
Vorgelia’s game, Cyber Chicken, can be found here.
With special thanks to Alex for coming on the show and providing his insights, Grant The Thief for his assistance in the “Shady Dealings – The BLT” outro, and to BBB/Jahvin Baxter of Yakage Force Studios for his incredible Sheryl Nome by way of Pulp Fiction album art.
